May 20, 2014

Community Commons is proud to be the home of Salud America! Growing Healthy Change; a site dedicated to empowering healthy community change for Latino children locally and across the nation.

“Roll Models” Ride for Fitness

Dante Jones understood all too well the struggles to find after-school fitness and leadership programs in a neighborhood faced with high crime rates and poverty. To make a change, Jones started Roll Models—a mentoring program that teaches kids important life lessons while getting them outside to bike and skate.

Now, through a partnership with the San Antonio Housing Authority and other community members, the group leads nearly 150 participants through the streets of San Antonio on monthly bike rides.

Tools to Help You Make Change

  • Are children in your area lacking the resources or locations for physical activity? Get inspiration to make the case for change to your policy makers by reading about Joint Use Agreements and positive ways to Cultivate Prevention Champions.
  • Create visual data like dials and tables from our Maps & Data page to show community members the situation in your area compared to other locations.

  •  Visit our Map Gallery to see how you can use data to paint a picture for health. Check out the Map Room to create your own maps that can be zoomed to state, county, zip code, and census tract levels depending on what data you are viewing.

And just as important, get involved. That’s why we created Community Commons — to help you use the latest technology and tools to make lasting change and share your stories and strategies so that we can collaborate, learn, and make change together.
