Every Body Walk! Collaborative Partners and America Walks is conducting a survey to develop a national picture of community and statewide efforts to increasing the number of people regularly walking, and they want to hear from you!
Right now, there are thousands of organizations and individuals leading walks, creating pedestrian-friendly laws and places, and telling their neighbors about the multiple benefits of a short walk. It’s time to get those ideas, lessons, and experiences pulled together so we can collaborate with, learn from, and make change alongside each other.
Community Commons caught up with Scott Bricker, director of America Walks, to get his take on this nationwide effort.
Why is this survey important to America Walks and all walking advocates?
SB: There are many co-benefits to increased walking and improved conditions so that people can safely and comfortably walk. America Walks and the Every Body Walk! Collaborative are beginning to catalogue the type and amount of local walking advocacy and programming activity being implemented in communities and by organizations. We’re interested in both walking programs and environmental change efforts that make walking safe, routine and enjoyable.
SB: We will use the survey results to improve our technical and campaign resources aimed at supporting local actions and leaders. We will also use this information to push out opportunities and best practices for everyone to get engaged with. Finally, this information will provide insight into strategies to support the advancement of a national walking movement from the local perspective.
Will the results of the survey be made available?
SB: America Walks will release a short report detailing the results of the survey. We will also work with Community Commons to geographically depict this information for all to use.
How can we all get more involved in America Walks?
SB: Start by endorsing the Vision for a Walkable America. From there you will get looped into the services we provide and announcements for programs such as our webinars.
