A focus on active living runs in Community Commons team member Roxanne Fulcher’s family! Marissa Orzame, a Detroit 7th grader and Fulcher’s cousins’ daughter, recently won a school visit from Detroit Tiger’s quarterback Matthew Stafford for Boulan Park Middle School by daring those around her to dance.
A Healthier Michigan asks students like Marissa to give their tips for healthy living through their annual Make A Play for Healthy Habits video contest. Orzame was a finalist last year, but was determined to win in 2013. Congratulations Marissa!
Use Community Commons Data Tools to Inspire Action!
Peer messaging is a great model for promoting active living and health eating among youth. Community Commons features a number of data visualization tools that can illustrate the need for change and motivate youth to get involved.
In the following Community Health Needs Assessment Report, it is easy to see that Detroit’s Wayne County has higher than state and national averages of diabetes prevalence.
This information, as well as Community Commons maps, can be shared with youth as motivation for “moving the needle” in a more positive direction for a healthier tomorrow.
